Planning a house rewire in Edinburgh or East Lothian

A rewire is easier to plan when you think beyond the wiring itself. Socket positions, lighting, access and the order of other building work all affect the job. A little preparation helps you have a useful conversation before agreeing a scope or a date.

Start with the condition of the installation

The age or appearance of a house does not tell you everything about its electrics. A period property may have had several electrical alterations, while a newer-looking room can still contain older wiring. Discuss the installation and any existing reports before assuming that every circuit needs replacing.

Electrical Safety First explains that periodic inspection and testing assesses the condition of an installation and records issues in an EICR. If you are unsure where to begin, ask Raymond whether an inspection would be an appropriate first step.

Electrical Safety First: understanding an electrical inspection

Walk through the rooms before choosing socket positions

Think about where you actually use power. In a living room that might mean the television, lamps and a home-working desk. In a bedroom it could mean bedside charging and where furniture will sit. In a kitchen, planned appliances and the final layout should be part of the discussion.

Make a simple room-by-room list and mark any furniture positions you already know. Include lighting preferences and where you would like switches. It is easier to discuss these decisions before walls are finished than after decorating has begun.

Agree access, disruption and making good

Tell Raymond whether you will be living in the property during the work, which rooms need to remain usable, and whether other trades will be working there. In Edinburgh flats, mention shared access and any practical restrictions on reaching the property.

Ask which areas may need access through walls, ceilings or floors, how power interruptions will be arranged, and what protection and tidying are included. Confirm who will handle plaster repairs, decorating and any other making good. These details should be part of the agreed scope rather than an assumption.

Compare the scope, not just the total

For a useful quote, provide your postcode, the rooms involved, any previous electrical report and your renovation schedule. Explain whether you are considering a full rewire, work to selected rooms, a consumer unit upgrade or a new lighting layout.
