Home EV charging: what to prepare before installation

A home charger should work with the way you park and use your car. Before choosing a unit, it helps to discuss the property, the electrical supply and the route between them. That keeps the conversation focused on a suitable installation rather than a charger that may not fit the job.

Begin with your parking space

Note where the car normally sits and where its charging port is located. A charger position that looks convenient on the wall may be awkward if you have to stretch a lead around the vehicle every evening. Include how you enter the house, open doors and move around the driveway.

If the parking area is shared, rented or separated from the property by a footpath, explain that when you enquire. Access, permissions and a suitable cable route need to be discussed for the particular site. Do not assume that a cable can simply be run across a public pavement.

Let the electrician assess the supply

The existing supply and installation are part of planning a charger. Share any electrical reports you have, along with photographs of the outside of the consumer unit and the intended charger area if these can be taken safely. Leave all covers in place.

Electrical Safety First recommends a dedicated home charge point installed by a competent electrician with the relevant EV charging training. Its guidance also explains that the installer should check the appropriate electrical protections and can help with the distribution network operator notification.

Electrical Safety First: electric vehicle charging advice

Discuss the charger and everyday use together

Tell Raymond the vehicle model, your usual parking position and any charger you are considering. Mention whether you want a permanently attached cable, how you would like to control charging, and whether the proposed location has a reliable connection for any online features.

Ask what is included in the installation quote: the unit, cable route, any related electrical work, setup and handover. Available charging speed depends on the equipment, vehicle and supply, so confirm the practical arrangement for your property rather than relying on a product headline.

Prepare a clear enquiry

Your postcode, a few safe photographs and a description of the parking arrangement give Raymond a useful starting point. Include any preferred installation date, but agree availability and the final scope before making plans around it.

Swaney Electrical Services offers EV charger installation across Edinburgh and East Lothian. Raymond holds the 2921 EV charging qualification and can discuss your property, equipment options and the next step towards a suitable home charging setup.
